Chewelah invites neighbors and welcomes guests to join us in celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. We have a week full of special events planned, including a classic July 4th parade, historic walks, a mysterious scavenger hunt, incredible performances, and daily community gatherings.

Operation: Mayhem!
Permission to run amok! Operation: Mayhem! is a 10-day creative scavenger hunt for rebels, families, artists, weirdos, history buffs, and playful humans of all ages. Expect shenanagins. There are standard scavenger hunt items sprinkled with a little chaos, community, and cackles of laughter. No talent or inhibitions required. Registration will stay open throughout the hunt!

Sounds of Red, White, & Blue
This patriotic evening will feature music, history, honor, and hometown pride for audiences of all ages. Enjoy performances by local musicians and singalong favorites celebrating the American spirit. Featuring narration by Geno Ludwig, Don McConnell's extensive Military Uniform Collection, & a formal Color Guard presentation by the American Legion. Click here for more info.

Chewelah Farmers Market
Join the farmers market in the city park for an Independence Day Celebration featuring Rachelle Baumann of Say it in Silver singing the National Anthem, special speaker, County Commissioner and retired Chewelah Police Chief Mark Burrows. And an entertaining performance from national award winner and Stevens County Stomper, Hannah Johnson who will be clogging to patriotic bluegrass!

4th of July Parade
Set up your lawn chair along the parade route as we celebrate America's 250th together. Cheer on neighbors rolling by in classic cars, tractors, and maybe even some horses—it’s summer, just the way we remember it. Click here to get the parade map, register, or volunteer.

Picnic Fun
July 4th - 12:00 PM
Picnic in the Park
After the parade, join your neighbors for a community picnic in city park! The Lions Club will be serving free hot dogs, chips, water, and watermelon. KCHW will host the music played by DJ Evergreen. Games begin for the cornhole tournament at 12:30. Speakers will take the stage at 1:30pm, including a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event will close with Craig McQuian singing the National Anthem.

Picnic Fun
July 4th - 1:30 PM
Reading - Declaration of Independence
After the July 4th Parade, go to the city park for a picnic! Bring your basket & a blanket to setup your spot. There will be tunes by DJ Evergreen, fun games, and maybe a contest or two. The Lions Club is providing the food (while supplies last). We'll hear from Mayor Baxtor, Bill Matt Sr. from the Spokane Tribe, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Craig McQuain will end the day with a singing of the National Anthem.

Guided Cemetery Tour
Our own local self-taught historian, Sally Paramore, will host a tour of the Historic Chewelah Pioneer Cemetery. She'll share information about the major restorations, locating lost gravesites, and stories about some of the many veterans buried there. Reserve your spot on the tour!

Documentary Film Night:
Washington's Magnificent Magnesite
Join us for a one-night showing of the documentary by Donahue Labs about Chewelah's rich history and the magnesite mines. Washington State has a rich geological history, including nationally important ore resources. Come learn the incredible story of Washington's Magnesite Belt featuring Chewelah's Geno Ludwig, Jared Goguen, and Chad Pritchard.

As American as apple pie... and Bingo! Join us at Nina’s Thai Kitchen for an all-American evening of friendly competition. Presented by the Chewelah Center for the ArtsJoin us for a spirited community celebration as we kick off Chewelah’s commemoration of America’s 250th birthday. This patriotic evening will feature music, history, honor, and hometown pride for audiences of all ages.
Enjoy performances by talented local musicians along with beloved singalong favorites celebrating the American spirit through the generations. Experience a special historical narrative by Geno Ludwig and a display of military uniforms by Don McConnell.
The program will also feature a formal Color Guard presentation by the American Legion, the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.”
Bring your family, your friends, and your patriotic spirit as we celebrate 250 years of American history, heritage, courage, and community. Stars, stripes, song, and small-town sparkle all under one roof.
The Libraries of Stevens County has partnered with the Washington State Historical Society to bring the Moments That Made US exhibition to Chewelah!
This is a special exhibition during the America 250 commemoration that explores how generations of Americans have given meaning to the ideals set out in the Declaration of Independence.
The exhibition looks back across centuries and highlights both challenging and celebratory times from the colonial era to more recent generations. The exhibition explores five themes drawn directly from the Declaration of Independence:
- Created Equal
- Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
- Free and Independent States
- Consent of the Governed
- We Mutually Pledge
The featured moments from American history inspire curiosity about the events that shaped the nation. They remind us that our story was never inevitable, we shaped it at every turn.
The exhibition was developed through a multi-state collaboration to ensure that Americans throughout the nation would have the opportunity to meaningfully engage in the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Children's Art Festival
July 11th - The Children's Pavilion

The Children’s Art Festival is a day long event full of fun for kids in the Chewelah City Park as the Chewelah Arts Guild brings the arts to children in an activity-packed day. In past years children have made fabric water bottle carriers, tie-dyed shirts, created string paintings, learned sumi painting, practiced water color techniques, painted on easels and experienced interactive music movement all guided by Art Teachers. Art plus kids equals a great weekend. This annual event is fun for the whole family as parents watch and celebrate their children's creativity.
